Figure Building Part
During the two hour session The figure making session is alot of fun. Charlotte has been teaching this class for 16 years now. Inspired by a love of Tim Burton styling, these figures have a definite Burton-esque feel to them when they have been finished with the special black glaze. It gives the maker a real control over the decoration process as where marks and patterns are scraped in, they are then highlighted with the glaze application.
You are guided all the way through the process and when you have created your base figure you can then get really creative with hairstyles, clothes and any other accessories that you feel your clay Morph or Morphette really can’t do without.
After you have completed the session the pieces will be dried over a week or so to ensure no water content is remaining and then fired. Charlotte will then coat all the pieces in a specially developed black glaze and wipe back to bring out the details. The figures are then re-fired to 1160 degrees and can then be collected and taken to their forever home.
The Wheel Bit
Having a go on the potter's wheel is on many a 'Bucket List' and for some, it's just not pottery without a good old throw-down.
During the session, about half way through, Charlotte will demonstrate how to throw a pot and then guide each person through the process so that you will have made a small and hopefully, perfectly formed bowl.
The bowl is then taken off the wheel and is left to dry overnight so that it can be turned (the process of removing excess clay from the base by putting it back on the wheel upside down and removing clay with turning tools) and stamped with your name.
As soon as they are cool enough to remove from the kiln they are then ready for you to collect, or you can arrange for a second two hour session costing £30 per person. We have a large selection of glazes ready for you to come and paint your masterpieces. You can chose to add colour to your figure or leave it with the black glaze.
If you choose the second session, the pots are then fired for a second time to 1160 degrees celcius. Once cool enough the pots are carefully removed from the kiln.
The glazed pots are then wrapped and ready for collection. This entire process usually takes around three weeks but does vary depending on demand of the kiln. One kiln firing takes over 24 hours to complete!
